Production designer Boni Juan creates puppets for the theater, which is why he thought about making them as décor, as well. For Art in the Park, he came up with the eerie-looking “winged things.” These, he said, were angels who were still in limbo. Were they going to become good, or evil? Because he is also interested in birdcages, Juan fashioned their castles in the form of birdcages made of wood and other materials.

Baffled by how coconut shells were just discarded as uling, the husband of children’s book illustrator Bernadette Solina-Wolf saw the potential of the medium as art. So Solina-Wolf began to use the shells as the canvas for her paintings of family scenes, vintage photographs, and indigenous costumes, such as the T’nalak of the T’boli, the Yakan from Zamboanga City, and those from the Bontoc, Kalinga, and Ifugao tribes in the Cordilleras.
The artist also used the event as an opportunity to promote her advocacy against forced organ harvesting, information of which can be found on www.dafoh.org.

The artists collaborated on pieces that answer the question, “How does art engage?” According to Tutok project director Karen Ocampo Flores, they showed that the most attractive means is through play. Sailor Moon and figurines from other anime are framed by the duo, with Valenzuela reflecting on the “unity of forces” and the absence of what is good and bad, and Tecson musing on nostalgia.

Fans of the Star Wars series flocked to the Secret Fresh booth, where artists customized basic Stormtrooper heads cast in fiberglass and resin. The latter were designed and sculpted by Imagine Nation Studios.

The sculptor, designer, and gemologist says she gets bored with materials easily, which is why she plays with vinyl, metal, and wood for her art. She also creates jewelry for her day job. For Mother and Child, she used a soldering iron to engrave into the wood, and painted the scene. Though she is not religious, she nevertheless “likes the subject,” almost as much as she likes “burning things.”
